Ed Chamberlin and Emma Lavelle have their say on Nick Rust's tenure at the BHA

Our panellists give their thoughts on Nick Rust (pictured) and the future of the BHA

How do you assess Nick Rust’s time as BHA chief executive?

Ed Chamberlin, ITV Racing presenter He’s been excellent in what is a virtually impossible job. As a leader he’s charismatic and full of common sense. I remember the stick he took when he got the job as someone, like me, with a bookmaking background. But his passion for the sport has shone through and he’s proved a lot of people wrong.

William Derby, York racecourse chief executive The sport is in a better place than when he started, which is no mean feat. Significant progress has been made across a number of fronts – Nick and his team can be hugely proud. As with any sport or organisation, there are things still to be completed and things that could have gone better. The latter is often as a result of the structure of our sport rather one person.

Colin Hord, Horseracing Bettors Forum chairman He’s had a positive impact for punters, the desire to have a group representing the interests of bettors was one of Nick’s ideas and he’s always been supportive of the work that we do and regularly has a slot at our meetings. Like many, I was initially sceptical, believing he would be keen to support the bookmakers’ position on racing. But this has not been the case and his drive to modernise the BHA and look towards the future has to be applauded.
