Colin Keane 'can't blame anyone but myself' if possible whip ban rules him out of Field Of Gold ride at Goodwood

Colin Keane admitted he "can't blame anyone bar myself" if he misses a high-profile ride this month on Field Of Gold due to a whip ban.

Keane, who was appointed retained rider to leading operation Juddmonte last month, partnered Field Of Gold to his explosive wins in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh and St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

However, he faces the prospect of missing the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood after appearing to use his whip eight times when winning the Listed Gala Stakes on Windlord at Sandown on Friday, twice above the permitted level on the Flat.

Speaking after his win on Blue Bolt at Sandown on Saturday, Keane said: "It's my own fault. I'm so used to the limit being eight at home [in Ireland] and you just have to abide by the rules. We know six is the amount over here but when I was in a ding-dong battle it just went out of my head unfortunately."

The whip review committee will sit next on Tuesday, and if Keane is found to have breached the rules he faces a ban of 14 days, with penalties typically commencing two weeks after the date of the committee hearing. Glorious Goodwood begins on July 29, with the Sussex taking place on the second day of the meeting.

Field Of Gold is a general 4-6 favourite for the Sussex and Keane said missing the ride on the son of Kingman would be "unfortunate but my own fault".

He added on a potential appeal: "I don't know to be honest. Tony Hind is my agent and he's looking into it with the right people. He will tell me and knows more about it than I do.

"I can't blame anyone bar myself. It's a learning curve. As I said, we're used to eight at home and I can't tell you the last time I was done for the stick, but they're the rules."
