Brilliant Derby winner never seen again after being taken from stud

Shergar was kidnapped from the Ballymany Stud, County Kildare, on the evening of February 8, 1983, and never seen again.

Sir Michael Stoute's brilliant winner of the 1981 Derby, whose ten-length margin remains the widest in the race's history, had been syndicated at the end of a career in which he won six of his eight races, including the Irish Sweeps Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

It is widely believed the Provisional IRA was behind his disappearance, and that the motive was to raise money for arms. However, the IRA has never officially claimed or accepted responsibility.
