There was a rather left-field postscript to Breeders’ Cup Classic night at Churchill Downs on Saturday as it emerged a man was arrested after allegedly mounting a horse and attempting to ride it on to the track.

Kentucky State Police said Michael Wells-Rody, 24, sneaked into a restricted area, mounted a horse and made it to the track entrance before being stopped.

Police said in the citation that Wells-Rody "was manifestly under the influence of alcoholic beverages" and when asked to dismount the horse and leave the area, he became loud and disorderly causing alarm to Churchill staff members.

Wells-Rody, from Kentucky, was taken to a nearby county jail in Louisville and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

It may appear a bizarre turn of events, but similar scenes have happened in Britain. In October 2010 a Chepstow racegoer gatecrashed the winner's enclosure and attempted to jump aboard the Paul Nicholls-trained Escort'men.

In June 2014, a racegoer at Leicester jumped on to the course and tried to outsprint the runners in the final furlong of a race. The racegoer was banned from every racecourse in the country.
