Karen Bradley, the Conservative MP for Staffordshire Moorlands, was made culture secretary in new prime minister Theresa May's cabinet reshuffle yesterday, taking overall responsibility for matters affecting the department's interests in horseracing and betting.

Bradley, 46, replaces John Whittingdale at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and is not well known to racing's leadership or to the betting industry.

She was elected to parliament in 2010 and moved to the home office, where May was secretary of state, in 2014.
