'Get there early' urges Haggas with Baaeed to star on Newmarket's open weekend
The countdown has begun to what could be the final public appearance in Britain from the mighty Baaeed when he appears on day two of the Henry Cecil Open Weekend in Newmarket on Sunday week.
Indeed, the unbeaten superstar could kick off the Tattersalls-sponsored gallops event with trainer William Haggas keen to get his possible Arc contender to canter on Warren Hill soon after the 8am start time.
The son of Sea The Stars took part in the same public display a year ago, not long after landing his first Group 1 in the Prix du Moulin, but undoubtedly there will be more phones, cameras and even iPads following his every move this time around. He could even attract more visitors than Enable, for whom there was a huge turnout in 2019.
Haggas said: “All being well, Baaeed will canter on the Sunday morning along with a few others including Addeybb. We may well be out first, so if people want to get a glimpse of him they should plan to get there early.
"We always support the Warren Hill event and hopefully the appearance of Baaeed will boost the number of visitors to the Henry Cecil Open Weekend.”
Event chairman Charlie Fellowes will be opening his Bedford House yard along with a host of others on the Sunday from 9am.
He said: “There won’t be as many yards opening this year, which may be a good thing as it means people can get around more of them. Roger Varian has been a big supporter and is opening up again, as are Simon and Ed Crisford, who are in flying form.
"Also, James Fanshawe will open his yard after a year off and then you have all the young guns such as George Boughey, who will be able to show off his Classic winner Cachet, and James Ferguson who is having his best year.”
The two-day event kicks off on Saturday, September 17, when there is racing on the Rowley Mile and culminates on the Sunday with the Clipper Logistics Racing Personality Showjumping. Other sites open include the National Horseracing Museum, National Stud, Jockey Club Rooms, British Racing School and Tattersalls.
The Henry Cecil Open Weekend is raising money in support of Racing Welfare, Newmarket Day Centre, the National Horseracing Museum and Newmarket Heath Ambulance, a fundraising initiative to purchase a quick response unit for work riders on Newmarket Heath. Last year a record £60,000 was raised for charity.
Tickets are £15 when bought in advance (£20 on the day) and under 16s are free. For more information click here.
