Bookmakers fall foul of Goodwood underage betting operation

An underage gambling investigation carried out at the Qatar Goodwood Festival last month saw 13 bets illegally placed by minors.

In an operation run by Chichester district council's licensing team, with the support of Goodwood racecourse, Sussex Police and the Gambling Commission, a total of 20 test purchases were made that resulted in 13 bets being taken without challenge, while seven were refused.

Councillor Roger Barrow, cabinet member for environment at Chichester district council, said: "We have a legal responsibility to protect children and young people from being harmed or exploited by gambling.
