Moore donates top jockey prize to stricken Sire De Grugy farrier

Ryan Moore, crowned Glorious Goodwood's leading rider for the fifth time, donated his £1,000 prize to the former farrier of popular chaser Sire De Grugy.

Steve Fisher, a friend of the Moore family, which enjoyed so much success with the 2014 Champion Chase hero, suffered a debilitating stroke four years ago.

He can move only his head and communicates via his eyes.

Moore, whose previous titles came in 2007, 2009 and in the last two years, had five winners on the Sussex Downs this week and was quick to donate the Racing UK-sponsored prize to Fisher.

While Moore was top of the jockeys, Goodwood enthusiast Mark Johnston came up trumps in the trainers' battle - a crown he was capturing for the 12th time.

Vale Of Kent's victory in the 7f handicap edged him past William Haggas, who also had four winners but lost out on the number of placed horses.

"We'll go home tonight happy," said Johnston.

"It's been a frustrating couple of days as some big-fancied runners were beaten and there were a lot of seconds, but it's great to get one more.

"We come here every year and I kept telling my son Charlie last week, it's just like Royal Ascot: you've got to take the horse where it has the best chance - you can't save it for Goodwood.

"We've come with a strong team so it's great to come out on top again. It's a big team effort."
