Clemmie comes clear of rivals to boost Guineas credentials

A plane malfunction may have delayed her arrival from Ireland but there was no mistaking the way Clemmie flew home to give Ryan Moore his first win in the juvenile fillies' feature.

As a sister to this year's 2,000 Guineas winner Churchill, Aidan O'Brien's filly was always bound to be suited to the Rowley Mile course and so it proved when she ran out a convincing winner from the French raider and Albany winner Different League.

Clemmie was already at the head of the betting for next year's Qipco 1,000 Guineas before the race and cemented her position further into 3-1 (from 7) with Paddy Power.

Moore, who finished runner-up in the six-furlong contest on Roly Poly a year ago, was impressed. He said: "She travelled well throughout the race and is a progressive filly. It will be no surprise if she continues to progress."

O'Brien was winning his second Cheveley Park following the success of Brave Anna a year ago. He said: "It's her class that makes her that quick over six as going up to seven and a mile will be more her range.

"As a sister to Churchill you've got to be delighted with that. Everything she's done at home is pretty special and she has yet to go over seven furlongs."

Having not raced since winning the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, Clemmie is heading into the autumn a fresh horse, something that may see her head to Del Mar in November.

O'Brien added: "As she missed out at the Curragh due to bad ground [in the Moyglare Stakes], we had the Breeders' Cup Fillies Turf in mind for her coming here and that could be a plan."

Paddy Power introduced Clemmie into the betting for the mile contest at 10-1.

On the runner-up, French trainer Matthieu Pallussiere, said: "We're delighted with her. She keeps putting up great performances. You would imagine she will keep improving with her physique. Her first two runs in France were just good gallops basically.

"I left it all up to the jockey and he knew what to do anyway. She beat by a filly who is improving. You would have to think about taking the winner on again."

Roger Varian, trainer of third placed Madeline, said: "She ran very well and I am delighted. She is an honest, talented filly but she didn't quite have the guns to win.

"We'll see how she is but we might consider the Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar. The way she has stayed on she would get a two-turn mile and she will be better on faster ground."
