Breeders' Cup day 2 preview
The action intensifies on Saturday at Del Mar as the Breeders’ Cup reaches its climax, featuring the remaining nine Grade 1 contests. Nine top-level races on one card - it doesn’t get much better.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic will command most attention from an American perspective, with Sovereignty bidding to extend his winning streak to five at the highest level.
The Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes hero once again faces Journalism, who landed the Preakness in his absence. A winning prize fund of more than $4.4 million is up for grabs.
From a British standpoint, the Breeders’ Cup Turf takes centre stage as seven-year-old Rebel’s Romance attempts to become the first horse in history to win the race three times.
The Godolphin stalwart has been handed a plum draw in stall one. Also representing Britain are the James Owen-trained Wimbledon Hawkeye, last seen landing the Nashville Derby, Amiloc for Ralph Beckett, and El Cordobes for Charlie Appleby.
The biggest threat to Rebel’s Romance comes from Minnie Hauk, the Arc runner-up and Turf favourite. The Frankel filly breaks from stall eight as she seeks redemption after being touched off by Daryz in Paris.
Other Grade 1 highlights on Saturday’s card include the Sprint, Distaff, Mile and Filly & Mare Turf, rounding off two spectacular days of world-class racing at Del Mar.
The big Breeders' Cup day 2 races to look out for + where to spend your £30 in Sky Bet free bets
- Turf - Saturday, 9.41
- Classic - Saturday, 10.25
- Filly and Mare Turf, Saturday 12.25
With Sky Bet offering a total of £30 in free bets for the Breeders' Cup, there are plenty of options available for you to bet on. Here are some ideas:
- Rebel's Romance to win the Breeders' Cup Turf @ 11-4 with Sky Bet
This experienced seven-year-old bids to become the first horse ever to win this race three times, and he has every chance of doing so. His previous American experience could give him the edge over Minnie Hauk, who had a tough race last time when finishing second in the Arc.
Godolphin’s star has won 20 of his 29 starts, amassing more than £11 million in prize-money, and looks to have at least one more big performance in him.
Note, these odds are subject to change
