Duke of Cambridge Stakes Preview
The Duke of Cambridge Stakes is the third race on day two of the royal meeting on Wednesday, June 18.
Introduced in 2004 as an incentive for connections to keep Classic-generation fillies in training, this Group 2 for older fillies and mares is run over a mile.
Running Lion was a record-extending fifth winner of the race for trainer John Gosden last year and the five-year-old is still in training, albeit she has been beaten on all four starts since that success.
Any Group 1-winning fillies have to carry a penalty in this race, which means the very best usually take on the boys in the Queen Anne Stakes on the opening day. However, the lure of a potential Royal Ascot winner for the Quantum Leap Racing could persuade the syndicate to drop Tamfana to Group 2 company after she managed to beat only one rival in the Lockinge Stakes last time.
The David Menuisier-trained four-year-old was third to last season’s leading miler Charyn in a Group 1 on Champions Day last October on her only previous outing at the track and could be an interesting contender if she does not go down the Queen Anne route.
