2026 Cheltenham Festival: complete preview
It is time to feel and hear that famous Cheltenham roar. The four-day festival, the biggest jumps meeting of the season, is where every top trainer, jockey and owner wants to be, and there are plenty of chances for more history to be created.
Willie Mullins was crowned leading trainer for a remarkable 12th time at last year’s festival as he equalled his 2022 record of saddling ten winners. He now has 113 victories to his name at the meeting and is likely to feature in the winners’ enclosure one or two times again this time round.
He will bid to land another Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, the feature of the meeting on day four, with two-time winner Galopin Des Champs, while stablemates Gaelic Warrior, I Am Maximus and Grangeclare West could feature in the race.
Nicky Henderson is next on the list of top trainers with 75 victories to his name, and he looks to have a well-stocked team heading to Gloucestershire. Old Park Star (Supreme), Lulamba (Arkle) and Jango Baie (Gold Cup) are all expected to run big races.
The battle between Britain and Ireland for the Prestbury Cup - a clash that has been dominated by the former in more recent years - appears to be heating up quite nicely, with the home side expected to fire plenty more arrows this year.
Dan Skelton, Paul Nicholls, Ben Pauling and Olly Murphy are amongst those from Britain who are set to have leading contenders in some of the key races, but Mullins - with the likes of Gordon Elliott and Henry de Bromhead - will not go down without a fight.
