Royal Ascot Day 5 preview
The final day of the royal meeting kicks off with the Listed Chesham Stakes over the seven-furlong trip. Last year, Aidan O’Brien saddled Bedtime Story to a stunning nine and a half length victory over Pentle Bay. It was a record-extending seventh win in the race for O’Brien, who is likely to be represented again this year.
The Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes produced a shock 16-1 success for Isle Of Jura and George Scott 12 months ago. The £250,000 event, which is run over a mile and a half, has been won a record 11 times by Sir Michael Stoute.
The feature on the final day is the £1 million Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes and last year it was won by the Charlie Hills-trained Khaadem for a second year running. The six-furlong contest is the most valuable race of the week.
After the final top-level race of the five days, attention turns to the Group 3 Jersey Stakes, which last year saw the Richard Hannon-trained Haatem come out on top for Wathnan Racing. Run over seven furlongs, the race is open to three-year-old horses and leading trainers such as Aidan O’Brien and Charlie Appleby have triumphed in recent years.
The Wokingham Stakes is a very competitive handicap and is next up on the agenda, and was won by the William Haggas-trained Unequal Love last year.
The Golden Gates Stakes is the penultimate race of the week, with last year’s race going the way of the Harry Charlton-trained Hand Of God. The 1m2f contest comes before the Queen Alexandra Stakes, which brings the action to a conclusion.
