2025 Royal Ascot preview
Royal Ascot is the biggest week of the season in Britain’s Flat racing calendar with five days of top-class action. Britain’s most lucrative race meeting kicks off with a bang on Tuesday, June 17 with the Queen Anne Stakes, the first of eight Group 1 races across the week, which concludes on Saturday, June 21 with the Queen Alexandra Stakes.
More than £10 million of prize-money is available, which is why the meeting attracts the best from Ireland, France and Australian aces such as Asfoora, who landed the King Charles III Stakes on the opening day last year.
The prestige of the royal meeting is evident even before racing as each day begins with the Royal Procession at 2pm. Members of the royal family and their guests will arrive in style in carriages along the straight mile in a tradition that dates back to 1825.
Having a runner, let alone a winner, at the royal meeting, whether that be in one of the 22 Pattern or Listed races or in one of the handicaps, is a dream for most owners.
Because of the appetite to compete at the Berkshire venue, most of the 35 races attract large field sizes, and the quantity of runners as well as the number of highly-regarded horses taking part contribute to one of the biggest betting weeks of the year.
Whether it is correctly choosing which well-hyped two-year-old will strike in the Coventry Stakes, the first juvenile race of the meeting, or plucking for the right one in the Royal Hunt Cup, the 30-runner handicap cavalry charge on the Wednesday, the test of finding a winner during the royal meeting attracts punters of all levels.

Military Code | 9-2 with Sky Bet |
Charles Darwin | 6-1 with Sky Bet |
Warsaw | 8-1 with Sky Bet |
Andab | 10-1 with Sky Bet |
Gstaad | 12-1 with Sky Bet |
Which horse should you bet on at Royal Ascot day one?
With Sky Bet offering a total of £30 in Royal Ascot free bets, there are plenty of options available for you to bet on. Here are some ideas from Racing Post's Charlie Huggins:
- Postmodern to win the Coventry Stakes @7-2 with Sky Bet
Wathnan Racing came close to winning the Coventry Stakes last year with Electrolyte and Columnist finishing second and third. The powerful operation may gain compensation in this Group 2 with Postmodern, who looked impressive when winning by five lengths on his debut at Yarmouth last month. Trainer Hamad Al Jehani suggested that Ascot may come too soon for this son of Too Darn Hot, bu his owners want winners at the royal meeting and this colt looks talented enough to oblige.
