Three horses with a chance in the National Hunt Chase

Staying is the name of the game in the National Hunt Chase and one with bags of stamina is Gaillard Du Mesnil, who will appreciate returning to a marathon trip and who is sure to get the trip.

He followed a third-place finish in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at last year’s festival by placing in the Irish Grand National, a great effort for one who was so inexperienced.

He started this season with a second placing in the Drinmore behind ante-post Turners favourite Mighty Potter before going one better in the Grade 1 Neville Hotels Novice Chase at Leopardstown when upped to three miles.

He was by no means disgraced when third at the Dublin Racing Festival over a shorter trip and is a worthy favourite for this contest.

Churchstonewarrior was second behind Gaillard Du Mesnil at Leopardstown before getting the better of Mahler Mission in the Grade 2 Ten Up Novice Chase last time, where three-quarters of a length separated the pair.

Churchstonewarrior hasn’t finished outside the first two since he started chasing and has won over 3m1½f, so may enjoy the big step up in trip.

Mahler Mission, seventh in last year’s Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, has been consistent since going over fences and will have the services of top amateur Barry O’Neill.

Winner of six point-to-point titles in a row, O’Neill went agonisingly close aboard Discorama in the 2019 National Hunt Chase when losing out by half a length to the Jamie Codd-ridden Le Breuil.
