2024 December Gold Cup: ones to watch

The 2m 4f Nyetimber December Gold Cup at Cheltenham ranks as one of this weekend's most popular sporting events, with a talented field going to post at 1.50pm for the return of this Premier Handicap. Traders are struggling to find their favourite and that's great news for value hunters with some great odds available on the race.

Fugitif won the race 12 months ago for Gavin Sheehan and Richard Hobson in the first running of the event since 2021. Will the defending champion score back-to-back wins, or is an upset on the cards? You'll find our three horses to follow below.

Nine-year-old Fugitif returns, and backers hope for more of the same after watching the talented gelding dig deep to win this race by a short-head from Il Ridoto. Despite that impressive and gutsy win, Fugitif hasn't appeared in the winner's enclosure since, with his stats for the year showing a third at this course in January before pulling up at Cheltenham and Aintree and then posting fifth here last month. That's far from convincing, and bettors are likely to look elsewhere.

Il Ridoto is back for another crack at the December Gold Cup after that painful near-miss. The seven-year-old trained by Paul Nicholls did everything right last time and returns on the back of a strong win over track and trip last month. He beat Ga Law by a comfortable margin in the Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase to end an unconvincing run of form. Will he end the year on a high? Il Ridoto looks like the one to be on here.

Another runner with a strong chance that's been well supported in the early betting is Madara for Dan Skelton, who is seeking his first December Gold Cup champion. The five-year-old hasn't won since February and finished fourth in the race won by Il Ridoto here last month. He bagged a Handicap Chase here 12 months ago over two miles and seems to reserve his best performances for this time of year.
