Cheltenham November Meeting day 1 preview

Friday’s Countryside Day kickstarts the November Meeting at the home of jumps, and six races jam-packed with action await.

After the Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle, the 2m4f Veterans' Handicap Chase sees several horses returning for their seasonal debuts. Fugitif is at the top of the betting for Richard Hobson, and 5lb claimer Charlie Maggs eases the weight on the ten-year-old’s back. The current 3-1 shot was slightly disappointing last season and will need to recapture some of his old form.

Gunsight Ridge can’t be ignored. Trained by Olly Murphy, he produced arguably his best performance in defeat at the Aintree Festival in the Red Rum Handicap Chase, where he finished fourth and Sean Bowen is on board. 

Seven go to post in the 3m1f novices’ chase next, and the Anthony Honeyball-trained Leave Of Absence, who has never finished outside of the top three, is joint 5-2 favourite with Wade Out for the contest. Wade Out will again be guided by Sean Bowen for Olly Murphy, and the step up in trip shouldn’t be an issue for this three-time hurdle winner.

The showpiece Shloer Chase has a hot field heading to post for the £100,000 contest. Nicky Henderson has the favourite in the JP McManus-owned Jonbon, and the topweight is attempting to land the race for the third time in a row. Dan Skelton’s team are in red-hot form and L'Eau Du Sud lines up at only 6-1, despite placing third in a Grade 1 at the Aintree Festival in April. Skelton also saddles 20-1 shot Calico.

Grade 2 action continues with The Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle. John C McConnell’s Heads Up is 5-2 and made a promising start over hurdles last time out at Listowel after finishing second in the Champion Bumper, but Percy Shelley could be one to watch. He’s been consistently placed on the Flat and has made a promising transition to hurdling for James Owen. The 10-1 shot has Sean Bowen booked in the saddle.
