2026 Cheltenham Festival preview

Jump racing fans, the countdown is on. Four unforgettable days at the Cheltenham Festival, the undisputed pinnacle of the National Hunt season, are fast approaching, with the very best of British and Irish racing set to clash once again at Prestbury Park. 

The action kicks off on Champion Day on March 10, where the spotlight falls on the fastest two-mile hurdlers in training as they line up for the Champion Hurdle, one of the most prestigious prizes in the sport and a race steeped in history. 

Day two is all about speed over fences, with elite chasers battling it out in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, traditionally one of the most explosive races of the week and a true test of precision, pace and nerve. 

St Patrick's Thursday delivers a compelling double-header, with the intermediate-distance Ryanair Chase often producing a tactical thriller over 2m4½f, while stamina comes to the fore in the Stayers’ Hurdle, as a new staying star looks to emerge. 

The Festival then builds to a dramatic climax on Gold Cup Day, headlined by the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the ultimate prize in jump racing and a race that continues to define legacies and crown champions. 

Across the four days, there are 28 races in total to savour, including 12 fiercely competitive handicaps, alongside novice and mares’ contests that regularly uncover the stars of the future. It all adds up to four days of unparalleled drama, quality and atmosphere at the greatest show on turf.
