Cheltenham Festival preview

While the Cheltenham Festival still retains its core selling points of seven races a day across the four-day meeting, the 2025 bonanza has had some tweaks to the itinerary. The headline Grade 1 races on each day — the Unibet Champion Hurdle, BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase, Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle, Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup — will now be the fifth race on the card rather than the fourth and be staged at the later time of 4pm.

There are three extra handicaps at the festival this year following a review of jump racing's biggest four days in the calendar by the Jockey Club. The restriction on professional riders riding in the National Hunt Novices’ Chase has been lifted in addition to changing the Grade 2 to a 0-145 novice handicap.

The Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase has been run as a conditions race since 2016 but has now reverted to a handicap with a 20lb weight range. The Grade 1 Golden Miller Novices' Chase, known as the Turners in its last iteration, has been axed in favour of a 2m4f limited novice handicap chase which is a variation of the contest held until 2020 which was moved to Sandown to make way for the Mrs Paddy Power Mares' Chase.

The experience criteria for the non-novice handicaps has been upped to four chase runs and five hurdle runs, while no mare will have to carry a penalty in the Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.

Despite all of these alterations, the core principle of the best horses and riders from Britain and Ireland taking each other on in front of crowds of more than 45,000 people remains the same.

Which horse should you bet on at Cheltenham?

With BoyleSports offering a total of £120 in Cheltenham Festival free bets, there are plenty of options available for you to bet on. Here are some ideas from Racing Post's Matt Rennie:

The 2023 Champion Hurdle hero has looked better than ever this term and he looks strongly fancied to regain his crown and another win at the Cheltenham Festival.

He missed the race last year but has returned with two fine wins when beating Lossiemouth in the Christmas Hurdle before winning at Cheltenham Trials day last time.

The 2023 Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner can notch another Cheltenham Festival win and cause a shock against the red-hot favourite Jonbon.

He has not been at his best since winning at Cheltenham two years ago, but his run in a Grade 1 at Leopardstown was a step back in the right direction, while Jonbon has never won at the Festival.
