2025 Royal Ascot preview

The opening day on Tuesday, June 17 features more Group 1 races than on any other individual day at the royal meeting. The Queen Anne Stakes is the first of three top-level contests and Rosallion is favourite to secure back-to-back victories at the royal meeting.

Richard Hannon’s stable star was third behind Lead Artist and Dancing Gemini in last month’s Lockinge Stakes but he should come on from that Newbury reappearance, given that was his first run since winning the St James’s Palace Stakes on this card last year. The Queen Anne is run on the straight mile and is only eligible to horses aged four and above, whereas the St James’s Palace is for three-year-olds and is staged on the round course.

Rosallion followed up in the St James’s Palace off the back of winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas last season which is a positive trend for this year’s odds-on favourite Field Of Gold, who won the same Curragh Classic last time. John and Thady Gosden’s colt could emulate his sire Kingman, who was second in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, before going one better in Ireland and in this race at Royal Ascot in 2014.

The King Charles III Stakes is the other Group 1 and Asfoora will bid to become the first back-to-back winner of the £650,000 5f sprint since Blue Point in 2019.

The Coventry Stakes is the first two-year-old Group race of the year and Postmodern could strike an early blow for the powerful Wathnan Racing operation.

The Ascot Stakes and Copper Copper Horse Stakes are staying handicaps that take place either side of the Listed Wolferton Stakes.

Racing Post pick for Royal Ascot Tuesday

With bet365 offering a total of £30 in Royal Ascot free bets, there are plenty of options available for you to bet on. Here are some ideas from Racing Post's Charlie Huggins:

Field Of Gold atoned for finishing second in the 2,000 Guineas by going one better in the Irish equivalent under Colin Keane at the Curragh. The John and Thady Gosden-trained son of Kingman can continue to emulate his sire by winning the St James’s Palace Stakes and get Keane off to a good start in his first Royal Ascot as Juddomonte’s retained rider.
