Royal Ascot day 2 preview
The £1 million Prince of Wales’s Stakes is not only the headline of the day two of Royal Ascot on Wednesday, June 18, it is also one of the highlights of the week.
The best ten-furlong older horses clash in the only Group 1 race of the day and the versatile Los Angeles is deservedly favourite after fending off the challenge of Anmaat in the Tattersalls Gold Cup last time. The runner-up from the Curragh is proven at this track and trip though, having defied odds of 40-1 to land the Champion Stakes last October.
Economics disappointed when finishing sixth behind Anmaat in that race but this has long been the intended reappearance run for last year’s Irish Champion Stakes winner by his trainer William Haggas. Ombudsman is shorter in the betting than Almaqam despite losing his unbeaten record to that rival in Sandown’s Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes while the Francis Graffard-trained Map Of Stars could have his first run outside of France.
The Prince of Wales’s is preceded by three Group 2 races, which ensure a lively start to day two. The Queen Mary Stakes is for two-year-old five-furlong fillies of which the market has Lady Iman clear of the rest, which is understandable given she is unbeaten in three starts and is already a Listed and Group 3 winner for Ger Lyons.
The following Queen’s Vase Stakes is for three-year-olds who need a trip as the 1m6f event often produces subsequent Gold Cup performers.
The Duke of Cambridge Stakes is staged over a mile for older fillies but the closing Windsor Castle Stakes will be run over 5f for the final time before changes to the Listed race are implemented for 2026 by the BHA’s Flat Pattern committee. The Royal Hunt Cup and Kensington Palace Stakes are both mile handicaps.
