One of Flat racing’s edges over the jumps is its capacity to produce top-class racing on a more consistent basis. Despite the inevitable lull caused by an absence of a Group 1 at the weekend, we were treated to several smart performances. Let us ponder what might happen next with the horses of interest. 

Zavateri was the poster boy on a wet Saturday afternoon and his smooth Celebration Mile victory came amid doubts over his capacity to handle soft ground combined with a quick turnaround after his City of York Stakes fifth. 

Those concerns were quelled with an authoritative success, in spite of a lost shoe, over one of Goodwood’s finest yardsticks in last season’s Sussex Stakes winner Qirat.
