High Definition vaults to top of Derby betting after amazing Beresford victory

Those who thought Aidan O'Brien would win a tenth consecutive Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes, and 20th overall, with High Definition would have thought their luck was out with two furlongs out.

But the son of Galileo came from last to first to run down Monaasib, and in doing so made himself the new favourite for next season's Derby with most bookmakers.

Unibet were most impressed, going 7-1 (from 25) but he can be backed at double that price with BoyleSports and Sky Bet.

While High Definition's backers were able to celebrate an unlikely victory, those who had taken 1.01 in running on Monaasib were left cursing.

But High Definition had shown a knack for coming from off the pace when winning on his debut at the track, and he repeated the feat under Seamie Heffernan, and in doing so emulated older brother Innisfree, who won the race 12 months ago.

O'Brien said: "He's a big-striding horse and is really one to look forward to. You think he's not going to get there and then he's there. He's a big horse and we'll probably put him away for next season. He could be a horse that could start off in a Guineas next year."

Beckett in business as New Mandate surges to Royal Lodge victory

Ralph Beckett's red-hot run of form continued at Newmarket on Saturday as New Mandate showed a decisive turn of foot to land the Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes.

Owner Marc Chan was recommended to purchase the colt by Frankie Dettori, and the jockey's advice has proved shrewd with New Mandate now unbeaten in two starts for his new owner.

Dettori was quick to dedicate the Royal Lodge victory to Chan, and added: "They went slow and I had to kick earlier than I wanted to but he's a good horse and has gears. A mile is spot-on at the moment."

Second went to the Aidan O'Brien-trained Ontario, with Cobh, who had been favourite until right before the off, weakening into third after leading.

Ante-post quotes were not forthcoming, as New Mandate is a gelding, and therefore ineligible for the obvious target of the Group 1 Vertem Futurity at Doncaster, as well next season's 2,000 Guineas.

However, the Royal Lodge is a 'win and you're in' race for this year's Breeders' Cup, and Beckett indicated a trip to America would be considered for New Mandate.
