Arc winner Alpinista and Baaeed head Cartier Horse of the Year nominations
Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Alpinista is one of four stars to have been shortlisted for the Cartier Horse of the Year award.
The Sir Mark Prescott-trained mare, who could yet have a swansong in the Japan Cup on November 27, is joined by six-time Group 1 winner Baaeed, top sprinter Highfield Princess and outstanding stayer Kyprios.
In addition to the Horse of the Year award, there are seven other categories – Older Horse, Sprinter, Stayer, Three-Year-Old Colt, Three-Year-Old Filly, Two-Year-Old Colt and Two-Year-Old Filly.
The contenders for Older Horse are Alpinista, Baaeed, Champion Stakes hero Bay Bridge and Champions Sprint winner Kinross.
The fields for the two three-year-old awards include two Breeders' Cup winners in Modern Games and Tuesday, while the latter's trainer Aidan O'Brien has three of the four nominees in the two-year-old colt division, including the now-retired Blackbeard.
There will be a non-equine award presented during the ceremony, the Cartier/The Daily Telegraph Award of Merit, for the person who has done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.
The 32nd staging of the awards will be held at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Wednesday evening.
