Sean Kirrane: dislocated shoulder while riding a winner at Haydock on Friday

There was a dramatic finish to the first contest at Haydock on Friday when the winning rider Sean Kirrane dislocated his shoulder during the race.

David O'Meara's 5lb claimer had pushed out King's Charisma to win the 1m2f handicap to delight backers of the 5-2 favourite, but instead of returning to weigh in he jumped off and ran to the ambulance by the side of the track.

Ben Curtis, rider of runner-up Hooroo, explained on Racing TV what had happened.

This year's winningmost jockey said: "I thought he was very excited about riding a winner just coming up to the line as he gave a bit of a squeal but when I got upsides I realised he only had one hand on the rein.

"I helped him pull up and he jumped off and ran over to the ambulance – hopefully they get it put back in and get him out of pain."

Kirrane, who was riding his third winner of the year, was reported to be back in the medical room being assessed as the runners for the next arrived in the paddock.
