All the morning news as Emitom puts his unbeaten record on the line at Newbury

Newbury: one of five tracks racing in Britain and Ireland today
1 of 1

As the Cheltenham Festival continues to edge ever closer, a two-day meeting at Newbury begins with an interesting seven-race card.

Although not the most valuable race of the seven, the 2m4½f novice hurdle (3.25) should steal the show with the unbeaten Emitom facing eight rivals including course-and-distance winner Tidal Flow and two for champion trainer Nicky Henderson, Gallahers Cross and Interconnected.

Doncaster's jumps card suffers from small fields, while Lingfield's afternoon all-weather meeting fares a little bit better numerically. The evening's all-weather action comes from Newcastle and Dundalk, with the latter meeting featuring the Listed Patton Stakes (7.45).

Final thought

Although there will be people reacting in disgust at the mere thought of discussing Flat racing with the Cheltenham Festival beginning in 11 days time, it's wonderful to see a horse of I Can Fly's calibre returning to action at this time of year. The Champions Day runner-up makes her comeback in the 6.45 at Dundalk.
