Addeybb is the early front-runner in the race to be crowned Cartier Horse of the Year.

The William Haggas-trained six-year-old, a dual Group 1 winner in Australia this spring, leads the table on 64 points.

He finished an excellent second to Lord North in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot last Wednesday.

Barney Roy, twice successful in Meydan early this year prior to finishing third in the Prince of Wales’s, is second on 44 points.

The prestigious awards, which were established in 1991, recognise excellence in European horseracing.

Harry Herbert, Cartier’s racing consultant, said: “While it is obviously disappointing that the Cartier Racing Awards ceremony will not be able to go ahead in its usual format this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is fantastic news that the prestigious accolades will still be awarded in 2020.

“I would like to thank Laurent Feniou, managing director of Cartier UK, and his team for Cartier’s continued support of European horseracing in these challenging times.”

There are eight equine awards, ranging from the Cartier Horse of the Year to the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt and Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly.

In addition, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the Cartier jury, has/have done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

The awards are decided by three established strands. Points are earned by horses in Pattern races (30 per cent of the total) and these are combined at the end of the season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists/handicappers (35 per cent) and votes from readers of Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph (35 per cent).

The 30th annual Cartier Racing Awards will be awarded in November. Sadly, the Covid-19 pandemic means the traditional awards ceremony at The Dorchester in London has been cancelled this year.
