A Plus Tard to miss Aintree and won't return until Betfair Chase in November

A Plus Tard's next outing will be in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November as connections have opted not to run the Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up in next week's Betway Bowl at Aintree.

The fact A Plus Tard has to go left-handed made Aintree the obvious target after chasing home stablemate Minella Indo at Cheltenham last month and he was 11-10 favourite for Thursday's Grade 1 with Betfair and Paddy Power.

Henry de Bromhead and owners Cheveley Park have had a rethink, though, and he won't run again this season.

De Bromhead told the Racing Post: "A Plus Tard won't go to Aintree. He's only seven and it's quite a quick turnaround after Cheltenham. Given that he's only a seven-year-old it would have been a big ask. We're going to wait and aim him at the Betfair Chase at Haydock next season instead.

"Talking to the Thompsons and Cheveley, they weren’t overly pushed about going to Aintree and I couldn’t argue with that. They felt he's got such a big future ahead of him and the best thing to do would be not to go.

"Obviously we have our left and right thing with him and it seems he needs to go left-handed. He’s in great form and, touch wood, it will stand to him. We'll aim towards Haydock now and start him back there next season."

A Plus Tard is a top-priced 12-1 for next March's Cheltenham Gold Cup, for which the Willie Mullins-trained Monkfish is favourite.

De Bromhead, who had six winners at Cheltenham and became the first trainer to win the Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase and Gold Cup in the same week, still has a decent army assembled for Aintree with Jason The Militant spearheading his challenge in the Aintree Hurdle.

The trainer said: "We have Jason The Militant in the Aintree Hurdle, Notebook in the Melling Chase and two, possibly three, in the Grand National. Balko Des Flos and Chris's Dream will definitely run and Minella Times might too, although he's not 100 per cent certain to go just yet. Visioman goes in the Topham and we have Moon Over Germany and Jan Maat in the handicap chase over two miles on the Thursday. I’d say we’ll have nine or ten runners in all."
