A big day for Oaks hopefuls as Noon Star and Teona clash in Musidora at York

The 2021 Flat season is well under way and it's full steam ahead to the first of the Irish Classics this month – and – and next month's Epsom Classics, the and .

Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Classic Clues, our new series running every morning, has you covered.

Here's a recap of Tuesday's action and how it impacted the Classic betting.

Racing round-up: French fancies on show at Chantilly

All eyes were on Chantilly as Prix du Jockey Club favourite Adhamo could only manage fourth in the Group 3 Prix de Guiche.

The winner, Makaloun, trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, was shorted to 7-1 (from 16) by Paddy Power for the French Classic on June 6, while Adhamo drifted to 8-1.

Favourite for the race is now the Aiden O’Brien trained St Mark’s Basilica, who is a 5-1 chance and also holds entries in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, Derby, and the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

What they said

Teddy Grimthorpe, Juddmonte racing manager for Noon Star
She's been very straightforward since her win, which did her a lot of good. She's not an extravagant worker at home, which makes it a little bit harder to gauge but nevertheless she's pleased.

Roger Varian, trainer of Teona
We've been very pleased with her preparation and the ground and the trip look ideal but this will bring her on as she's only had two all-weather races so far and is short on experience. It's always been the plan to come to this race or Newbury as a prep for the Oaks."

Today's racing: Dante meeting begins at York

Day one of the Dante meeting sets the stage for an interesting prelude to the upcoming Classics.

The Musidora Stakes (3.10) is the destination for Cazoo Oaks hopefuls Teona and Noon Star. The Group 3 is not a typical road to success for Oaks runners, with 2012 winner The Fugue the last to follow up with a placing in the Classic. However, with Teona and Noon Star prominent in the ante-post market for the Oaks, this season's running could heavily inform what happens at Epsom.

Teona was impressive for trainer Roger Varian when winning by nine lengths at Newcastle in November, and is making her first start since then for a yard in top form.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Noon Star has the breeding to suggest she can be a Classic contender, and should improve from a win around Wetherby in April.

While these two fillies are the main attractions, two other Oaks entries fill out the field, with Aidan O’Brien’s Snowfall (40-1 for the Oaks with bet365) and Senita (50-1 with William Hill) for John and Thady Gosden joining the fray.
