As expected, Irad Ortiz and Javier Castellano currently lead the Belmont Park jockey's standings with 14 and nine winners respectively. The duo get all of the best rides at the New York track, which is probably due to the fact that they ride for Chad Brown, and regularly enter the winner's circle.
With Ortiz not riding at the track on Sunday evening, it leaves the door open for Castellano to erode some of the deficit on his younger colleague and he has a stellar book of rides.
The first of two mounts that catch the eye for betting purposes is Brown's Linny Kate, who will break from gate one in the $66,000 allowance (7.23) contest for three-year-old fillies.
There are some interesting types in this and given Linny Kate's morning line price of 2-1, I was originally trying to take her on. However, after an hour of deliberation and watching replays, I just came down on the angle that she is the best horse in the race.
A $200,000 two-year-old purchase, Linny Kate showed promise in a number of breezes at Palm Meadows Training Centre before winning on debut in maiden special weight company at Gulfstream Park in late February.
She was well-found in the market that day despite being in drawn in gate 11 and after breaking well from the gates, she raced professionally in mid-division under Ortiz.
Linny Kate made a big mid-race move to get onto the heels of the leaders but looked a bit at sea once asked for more entering the straight.
She initially hung a bit left but was straightened up and surged at the leaders in the final half a furlong and got there on the wire rather cosily.
She will have improved a bundle for that victory and should get a nice trip in behind the pacesetters this time around. Recent works suggest she can follow up and although Mark Casse's Lashara catches the eye at a bigger price, she might not have the gear change of Linny Kate.
A large field of 12 runners is set to line up for the $53,000 maiden special weight (9.32) contest, in which Castellano rides the Jonathan Thomas-trained Scuttlebuzz.
This six-figure purchase has shown plenty of ability in the mornings and made an extremely eyecatching debut at Aqueduct in December when rallying from well off the pace to take third in a competitive field.
Unsurprisingly, he was sent off odds-on for a similar race in February but he lost virtually all chance at the start when squeezed out.
Rider Eric Cancel panicked and decided to rush him up to challenge five-wide around the bend. Scuttlebuzz picked up takingly and moved alongside the dueling leaders, only to pay for that serious effort in the stretch run.
He still finished fourth that day and is worth another chance. His draw in gate ten is far from ideal but Castellano has the tactical nous to get him into a good position before the turn and I think he will make it third-time lucky.
