US expert Tom Collins sides with front-running sorts at Will Rogers Downs

Fearless Will
7.45 Will Rogers Downs
1pt win

Miltontown
10.45 Will Rogers Downs
1pt win

Most horses in the $9,900 claimer (7.45), race two on the Will Rogers Downs card, have similar levels of ability and are noticeably inconsistent.

Races like this aren't normally the kind of contests I would describe as good punting opportunities, but after further investigation I was drawn to the chance of the Francisco Bravo-trained Fearless Will.

The youngest of ten runners in the field, four-year-old Fearless Will has drawn gate nine on his debut for Bravo, which is far from the most ideal starting point over 5½f at the Oklahoma track.

However, he is regularly the sharpest horse from the stalls in each race he has contested and my hopes are pinned on him coming out running and going straight to the front.

Ry Eikleberry, who is at his best on pacesetters, is an important jockey booking and the most interesting angle was the fact that Fearless Will has been fitted with first-time blinkers.

Blinkers often dramatically improve sprinters in the US, and the absence of headgear on his last few outings was rather surprising.

The aid will help keep Fearless Will's mind on the job and should be the catalyst to a much-improved display after his eighth-placed finish in allowance company on his return from a spell on the sidelines.

He pressed the pace that day but faded entering the straight, and will relish this huge class drop. Indeed, his previous effort at Remington Park came in black type company, while he also finished third in the Will Rogers Stakes this time last year.

Fearless Will has the most ability in this field and providing he doesn't get pitched too deep around the first bend, he should go very close.

The feature contest on the card – the $55,000 Classic Sprint Stakes (11.15) – will probably prove a one-sided affair with likely 2-5 shot Welder holding all the aces, so for the final tip of the day it is worth looking at the preceding $27,500 allowance contest (10.45).

Ten runners are set to go to post and it looks a thoroughly competitive affair, but good gatespeed and early pace should enable Miltontown to grab the early lead from stall one and he might be able to dominate.

Robertino Diodoro's four-year-old had a record of two wins from 14 starts before making his Will Rogers Downs debut in mid-March, where he was sent off at 6-4 in a four-runner allowance contest.

They went a pretty quick pace despite the small field and Miltontown was forced to race in behind, but he picked up strongly for pressure rounding the homebend and defeated favourite Taruca to win by half a length.

Miltontown was arguably more impressive when taking his record to two wins from as many starts here earlier in the month. He didn't break well but picked up the bridle quickly and scooted to the front. From there on he was eyecatchingly good.

Rider Ty Kennedy let out some rein and Miltontown picked up in taking fashion, hitting the line powerfully and beating Taruca again, by an even bigger margin this time with a wide gap back to the third.

This race represents a tougher task, especially as there is a much bigger field to fend off, but Miltontown appears to be improving and is in the form of his life, so it would be folly to oppose him.
