Wolverhampton Placepot picks: Richard Birch's perm for the £50,000 guaranteed pool

Variety Act stands out on first glance in leg one (4.30) of the Wolverhampton Placepot, for which the pool is guaranteed for £50,000.

However, Clive Cox unleashes a well-bred newcomer in Horwich, and it will be interesting to see how the son of Mayson fares in the market. Both are selected for the perm.

Hilltop, a course-and-distance winner in September, and dual recent Newcastle scorer Electric Avenue bring solid form to the table in leg two (5.00) and may fight out the finish.

Thanh Nam looks sure to go well in leg three (5.30), but the Marco Botti-trained Blue Mountains also catches the eye now she graduates to handicaps on a mark of 45. Once again, it may be wise to have two selections in this race.

Military Cross in leg four (6.00) and Alligator Alley in leg five (6.30) have the appearance of Placepot bankers, but leg six (7.00) looks more complex.

Fascinating Shadow, who has been in fine form at Lingfield, should again give a good account, while the Olly Murphy-trained Break Point appeals from a handicapping perspective.

He is rated 112 over hurdles, but only 46 on the Flat.
