Newmarket Placepot tips: Paul Kealy with his perm for the £150,000 guaranteed pool

Charlie Appleby has been represented in seven of the last eight renewals of Newmarket's opening maiden (1.40) and he's won it five times and had a runner-up in one of the others.

As there's next to no form to go on, his pair Snow Light and Dancing Flower make the most appeal for Placepot purposes.

I won't be going mad with a perm as there look to be too many solid favourites on the card, starting with Miss Nightfall in the second (2.12).

Having been backed from 16-1 the day before to 16-5 favourite for the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot, she ended up being on the wrong side and was last after having to switch away from the rail. While she rattled home for sixth, the race was already over on the far side. She's clearly very well handicapped.

The same is quite obviously true of More Thunder, who just failed after coming from way back in the Wokingham. He's got Group potential over this extra furlong, and will likely show it in the Bunbury Cup (2.50).

At least the three-year-old handicap (3.25) looks competitive despite only seven runners. My two would be Raafedd, who is much better than he was able to show in the Britannia last time, and Mister Winston, who could well have been let in lightly after comfortably beating a promising sort last month.

Italy looks very much the one to beat in the juvenile race (4.00) after his closest Leopardstown maiden victim finished second in the Chesham. 

The Appleby-trained Saba did win tidily enough on his debut at Sandown, but the form hasn't worked out and perhaps Chesham fourth Venetian Lace will present the biggest threat.

That just leaves the July Cup (4.35), in which dual Group 1-winning miler Notable Speech is the obvious favourite. It will be a surprise if he hasn't got the speed for this, but I'll add Big Mojo as he's got a big run in him when getting the breaks.
