There is a £150,000 guarantee for the Placepot at Doncaster and the opening mile maiden (1.10) is a difficult starter.

There is not a lot of form to go on and it is worth opposing the likely market leaders with Berkshire Regal and Game Character, who have shown promise.

The Champagne Stakes (1.45) is another open race for juveniles in which there is not lots of information available. There are also only two places on offer, so include Desert Castle, Gentle Hurricane and the unnamed favourite. If Desert Castle places, we will double lines.

The Betfred Portland (2.20) is wide open, but Getreadytorumble has an obvious chance and should be placed. However, it also looks worth including the generally consistent Station X.

I am keen to take on More Thunder in the Park Stakes (2.55) and will include both Flora Of Bermuda and Volterra, who has a consistent profile and can be relied upon to run his race.

Christmas Day looks the solid option in the St Leger (3.35) and it will be a surprise if he is out of the first three, so make him a banker.

The mile handicap (4.15) is the final leg and this could be between Mezcala and River King, so it is worth including both just in case.

World Pool: International repeat on the cards at Leopardstown

The World Pool returns to Britain and Ireland for the St Leger at Doncaster and day one of the Irish Champions Festival.

The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes headlines a card full of quality at Leopardstown. Taking on Ballydoyle in their own back yard could be considered brave, but if you believe Constitution River was beaten fair and square in York’s Juddmonte International then the British raiders have to be considered overpriced with the French Derby and Eclipse winner taking up a fair chunk of the market.

The only blemish on Item’s CV came in the Derby on very testing ground. Subsequently, he ran out a cosy winner of the York Stakes, form that has been boosted since, and, while he only just got up in the International, he would have been an unlucky loser having had his momentum checked when making his challenge at a crucial point in his run two furlongs out.

With showers expected on Saturday morning, there should be enough juice in the ground for Almaqam to show his best form. Ed Walker’s five-year-old possibly got a little lonely when caught late by Item on the Knavesmire, but it was still a career-best performance in defeat.

While Aidan O’Brien has won six of the last seven runnings of the Irish Champion Stakes, the yard had a few of their A-listers turned over in France last weekend, and if there are any chinks in Constitution River’s armour they will be exposed by these two top-class rivals.
