Carlisle Placepot picks: Richard Birch's perm for the £50,000 guaranteed pool

It is never easy to win two bumpers. Harbour Island, who managed the feat at Wetherby and Ffos Las last season looks a nice prospect for hurdling and can land leg one (12.15) of the Carlisle Placepot, which carries a £50,000 guaranteed pool.
Real Quartz, a £190,000 purchase after landing a point-to-point, is the obvious choice in leg two (12.45).
Leg three (1.15) looks a tricky five-runner affair. Whistleinthedark, who has been highly competitive off much sterner marks than 127, should make a bold bid. Course-and-distance winner Dubai Days won’t be far away if he is straight enough after a 200-day absence.
A clutch of young hurdlers, several of whom are having their first or second runs in a handicap, makes leg four very difficult without reference to a mature market.
Cahier’s Den and Rose’s Dart, the two at the top of the weights, are tentative suggestions.
Unexpected Party has the best chase form in leg five (2.15), but Steel Ally is an interesting recruit to fences and may be able to improve past his three-years-older rival.
Russian Virtue and Disco Annie, who both love Carlisle, stand out in leg six (2.48).
