Tom Segal with his selections to keep in mind for Kelso's Placepot

Credit: Edward Whitaker

It's a shame that the Persimmon Homes Scottish Borders National Handicap Chase isn't part of the Kelso Placepot because that competitive race would have made a bigger payout more likely.

The rest of the card isn't anywhere near as complicated so it's probably best to keep lines to a minimum with the first banker being Trooper Turnbull in the maiden hurdle (11.55).

Course specialist Vengeur De Guye has dropped to a good mark, so he will be hard to keep out of the mix in the conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle (12.25) but the following 2m7½f handicap chase (1.00) is much tougher.

Caventara fell in front when leading the Borders National last season and he didn't fire on his comeback run either. He's too well handicapped to ignore but he is a risky proposition so stick in Cesar Et Rosalie, as he's more talented than he showed at Wetherby last time.

Bourbon Beauty was far from disgraced against a good mare at Warwick last time and should have no trouble hitting the places in the mares' novice hurdle, while Artic Mann will only have to repeat his recent run at the track to warrant including for the novice handicap hurdle (2.02).

Mahlervous is the clear form choice in the novice chase (2.45) but it's always risky banking on one in such a contest. The fly in the ointment is Nadaitak, who won a Grade 2 as a novice hurdler and shaped better than his finishing position on his comeback run in a good race at Aintree.
