Tom Segal with his Curragh Placepot perm on Irish 1,000 Guineas day
With two big-field, and hard-to-crack, handicaps to end the Curragh Placepot, it is probably worth saving a few selections for those races and trying to keep the perm manageable by banking on solid ones in the Group races.
Broome seems to like testing ground and is the obvious one in the Tattersalls Gold Cup (2.40), while Taipan is a lot better than he showed in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. He can put himself in the frame for a Derby tilt in the Gallinule Stakes (2.05).
Pretty Gorgeous would win the Irish 1,000 Guineas (3.15) on her two-year-old form but she had to miss Newmarket and is drawn on the wide outside. If the runners come stands' side that won't be an issue but for Placepot purposes Fev Rover looks less risky after her good run at Newmarket.
Golden Horde's half-sister Heart To Heart looks the part on paper on her debut in the opening two-year-old maiden (1.30) but Aidan O'Brien's juveniles always come on for a run, so it's probably safest to put in She's Trouble as well. The latter has experience and will appreciate the step up to 6f.
As for the two handicaps, it would be possible to select about five in both races and not get one in the frame but the Joseph O'Brien-trained Bright Idea is still unexposed and will appreciate the step up to 1m2f in the Betway Handicap (3.50).
I'd throw in bottomweight Annexation too. The five-year-old will appreciate going back to the Flat having been too keen over hurdles.
Irish Lincolnshire winner Layfayette should go well in the 'Habitat' Handicap (4.20) but he's drawn on the wide outside. Instead, I would consider including bottomweight David Garrick, who caught the eye over further on his reappearance, while Fil The Power looks ready to strike after a good run at Cork last time.
