Come On Wongchoy

Happy Dragon
2.15 Happy Valley

Red Warrior
2.50 Happy Valley
2pts win

On a typically challenging eight-race card at Happy Valley, John Size and Joao Moreira can combine to boost the festive funds with the promising Red Warrior (2.50) in the concluding 1m½f handicap.

Conditions should be ideal for Red Warrior to enhance his already impressive record at the track of two wins from five starts – and he has never been out of the first four.

In Britain he was three from four for Jamie Osborne under his original name Rusper. There is no doubt he has the talent to eventually work his way into the top grade and this should be a perfect stepping stone for him.

On his latest outing, he was just touched off by the smart Super Chic, over 1m1f at Happy Valley and he is likely to be better suited reverting to this slightly shorter trip.

Champion trainer Size and his stable jockey Moreira remain ever-popular with punters, hence Red Warrior will be sent off at cramped odds. But he should still oblige and ranks as the best bet of the day.

One to note early on the card is the Danny Shum-trained Come On Wongchoy (12.15), who has registered solid seconds in the lowest grade over 1m½f on his last two starts.

This time he steps up to 1m1f, a distance he is expected to relish, in this Class 5 handicap. Alexis Badel, a former French champion apprentice, should be moving forward early from gate 8 and the gelding is likely to be among the leaders a circuit out.

The other decent bet is Happy Dragon (2.15) in a Class 3 1m½f handicap and significantly trainer John Moore has called on Silvestre de Sousa to ride the Australian-bred four-year-old for the first time.

In Ireland, Happy Dragon won a three-year-old Naas maiden over 7f for Michael Halford, carrying the name Yulong Xionghu. He is a maiden in Hong Kong, but with an inside draw this time, he can break the ice at last.
