BANKER

Elate (11.35 Del Mar)

The banker comes at the Breeders' Cup as Bill Mott's Elate tackles the Grade 1 Distaff under Jose Ortiz. I backed this highly-talented three-year-old a while back at better prices than available now, but the general 10-3 still represents value against a false favourite in Stellar Wind. She travels in behind rivals, which works perfectly from her post position in five, and her electric turn of foot will be on full display when Jose kicks for home rounding the bend. Forever Unbridled is definitely the biggest rival given she beat Songbird last time out, but Elate can finish day one of Breeders' Cup on a positive note for punters.

EYECATCHER

Elegiac(6.15 Newcastle)

Draw one isn't exactly ideal on the all-weather surface at Newcastle, but this son of Farhh has the ability to overcome that given his debut run when third at Lingfield last month. He ran green on that occasion – not often seen with Mark Johnston newcomers – but stayed on eyecatchingly well in the last two furlongs to finish a clear-cut third behind two useful horses. He will definitely improve for that and should score at the second time of asking.

DARK HORSE

Via Serendipity(4.05 Newmarket)

Having only his third run for Stuart Williams, Via Serendipity looks worth a play on ground likely to suit. Still relatively unexposed, this three-year-old has performed well on both starts for his current yard and was well-backed to land a handicap over this course and distance last time out but disappointed in finishing fifth. He didn't get the rub of the green that day, although he wouldn't have finished much closer to the easy winner, and he should perform better today.
