The Punt Daily: Tom Collins with four to follow on Saturday

BANKER

Gulf Of Poets (4.15 Haydock)

Mick Easterby's six-year-old Gulf Of Poets always comes to hand early in the season and it was no surprise to see him score on his reappearance at Pontefract on Monday. Barely having to come off the bridle, he kicked clear under Nathan Evans, who retains the ride, for a bloodless success. He still looks to be improving and can follow up that success off a 6lb higher mark, despite facing tougher opposition. The ground, trip and the way the race will be run should all suit.

GOOD THING

Calder Prince (2.05 Haydock)

Looked a useful three-year-old following a stint in Meydan in 2016 (reached a peak rating of 101) before seeing his form tail off at the start of last year. However, he started performing better towards the backend of the season with four of his five best efforts coming at this course, including when winning over a mile in July. He started this campaign a well-backed favourite at Wolverhampton off his reduced mark of 88 and dotted up, beating Dougan (who I strongly fancied and has won since) by no less than six lengths. He's been hit with an 11lb rise for that, but that is by no means unfair given the way he destroyed his rivals and I expect him to follow up.

EYECATCHER

Scenery (3.55 Leicester)

Eve Johnson Houghton's team haven't quite hit full stride yet this season but, based on last year, it won't be long until they do and it could be worth having a small bet on Scenery. The three-year-old gelding was comfortably beaten in three runs last year, but the best of those came on soft ground – the same as is expected at Leicester – when third to Speak In Colours. That winner has proven he's a borderline Group-class colt in two subsequent starts, while the second, fourth, fifth and sixth have all won since. He was well backed before his reappearance at Kempton, but wasn't suited by the all-weather surface that day and the return to turf is a plus.

EACH-WAY PLAY

Bargy Lady(5.35 Punchestown)

Willie Mullins' Bargy Lady sneaks in at the bottom of the weights for this competitive 25-runner Grade B handicap hurdle and she can prove a major player at a ridiculous price. The six-year-old mare has only had eight starts and, although she's won twice on heavy ground, she's probably better suited to quicker conditions which she gets here. Bargy Lady looked a useful recruit to hurdling last winter and was given a whole year off before pulling up on her reappearance at the start of the month. She was a bit buzzy and fresh through the opening stages but travelled extremely well only to blow up in the last four furlongs. The forecast price of 25-1 is insulting to her chance.
