Beat The Edge(1.40 Catterick)

It's clear that Beat The Edge needs a trip, as his best runs over hurdles and fences have come at three miles. He improved from his first two starts over fences this season to finish runner-up over that trip at Wetherby, where he looked the winner until making a horrendous mistake at the second last, sprawling on landing with the jockey doing well to keep the partnership going – he carried on battling and only went down by just over a length. The first-time blinkers that day seemed to make the difference, so it's good to see them relied on again, and he should go close to a deserved first success here.

Sam's Adventure(2.50 Catterick)

Sam's Adventure may have uninspiring form figures next to his name but having won when new headgear was applied before (cheekpieces), the first-time visor that he sports here is a welcome sight. He has tended to jump poorly and look a bit lazy in recent starts, so hopefully this addition will spark him to life as there is no doubt that he has become seriously well handicapped – he arrives on a mark of 122 (he has won off 129, 133 and 139). He is 17lb lower than his most recent win in the 2021 Eider Chase at Newcastle and a marathon trip coupled with testing ground is what he relishes. Everything points to a good run.

El Muchacho(3.55 Catterick)

I was fortunate enough to be trackside when El Muchacho won in effortless fashion at Plumpton earlier this month on his handicap debut, and nothing I saw there would suggest that he won't go in again. He travelled supremely well in the soft conditions behind the leaders before pulling his way to the front and clearing away by seven and a half lengths. He was merely nudged a few times after the last but quickened up impressively suggesting there was plenty more to come. He was put up 11lb for that success but arrives here under a 7lb penalty, meaning he is 4lb well-in. He should be hard to beat.
