The Meydan Punt: Nick Driver's horse racing tips at Meydan on Super Saturday
BANKER
Canvassed (4.05)
There are not many bankers on this card given the wide-open racing but Canvassed should be able to notch a second Mahab Al Shimaal if running to his best ability. He won this last year, just seeing off Good Effort, before running third in the Golden Shaheen on World Cup night and Good Effort ran a cracker for last year's formlines in Saudi Arabia last week. He showed last time out that he retains his ability, only just failing when getting a poor start from a wide draw. This time around he's got a plum draw in three, and most of the other market principles are stuck wide in Al Tariq and Freedom Fighter. As long as it all goes smoothly from the start, Canvassed should have a big chance of winning this again.
EACH-WAY PLAY
Looking at the bare formlines of the Jebel Hatta, Felix surely has a chance of going close. He was third in the Dubai Turf over course and distance last year behind Lord North at 33-1 and this is an easier task than that. He's shown from two big runs behind the likes of Dubai Warrior and Pyledriver that the quality remains and he could definitely grab a place, if not the outright win. As Lord Glitters has shown, the hold-up running style can pay dividends here as long as they stay clear of traffic. Felix actually accounted for Lord Glitters in that Dubai Turf and could do so again at a much bigger price. Zakouski and Barney Roy are dangerous but both haven't been at the top of their game, so with no young pretenders in the race, Felix could well take advantage if the top three don't run to their very best. Zakouski would be the danger given he's the choice of William Buick.
EYECATCHER
I think the most interesting horse on the card runs in the first thoroughbred race and Square De Luynes, more affectionately known as the "Frankel of the Fjords" back home could run a huge race. He's a bit of a monster in Sweden and routed two good British yardsticks, Outbox and Red Verdon in the Stockholm International. The former, Outbox, went on to win a huge pot in Qatar last time out and also finished two lengths away from the short favourite here, Hukum, at Kempton. On the bare form, Square De Luynes at a double-figure price is very teasing. Pat Cosgrave is actually the usual rider and flies to Sweden when the selection runs so there are no issues there and Cosgrave is confident this horse can compete on the international stage. There is no jockey better when front-running on the Dubai turf so I think the stars might align in the Dubai City of Gold for the Scandinavian superstar.
