Sweetspots: Long absence should not stop punters making a Menthe

Credit: Alan Crowhurst

This is a prime time for Fergal O’Brien, who in the last five years has a 21 per cent strike-rate (+92.10 profit to level stakes) in the two-week period either side of today’s date. His sole runner is Cheltenam De Vaige, who goes in the 3.10 at Huntingdon and ran a race full of promise on stable debut last time. This longer trip will suit.

Sirop De Menthe’s 217-day break shouldn’t prove a problem as he is two from two when returning after an absence of 200 days or more. Now 4lb lower than his last winning mark, he goes in the 3.20 at Lingfield, where his form figures are 21.

Barry Geraghty’s only ride is on the potentially smart Onefortheroadtom in the 2.00 at Worcester. He beat a Grade 2 bumper winner on his hurdling debut and looks as though he is up to winning this under a penalty.
