If you can’t be good be lucky. That’s not a bad maxim when it comes to punting and it certainly applied to me on Wednesday.

Late that night I was busy totting up the damage on the day, thinking my punt on Stamp Hill would probably have covered nearly everything else, when I discovered I’d backed the wrong horse in the final race at Doncaster.

Imagine my surprise and delight to find out, several hours after failing to lean Ziggy Lee into a place – I’m often horizontal when it’s tight – that I’d backed the winner Singeur instead.
