Roscommon finished up for the year on Monday, Thurles start their season today. Never mind the change in temperature, nothing else could be a starker reminder of the changing of the seasons than that.

It's good racing today, and if both of the Gigginstown runners – Alpha Des Obeaux and Prince Of Scars – turn up in the opening beginners chase, there won't be too many more intriguing races of that type in the next month or two. For tipping purposes we shall concentrate on a couple of the handicaps, competitive though they certainly are.

The Premier County Handicap Hurdle (3.45) has attracted a maximum field of 18 runners, plenty have chances, but one that comes into the race in better form than most is the Shark Hanlon-trained Summer Stormand he gets the vote.
