Sitar
Trainer: James Fanshawe
3rd, Yarmouth, June 30
This sprinting three-year-old filly produced a strong run to get up close home when winning at Nottingham last month and again she unleashed a telling finishing burst in this 5f handicap but on this occasion was unable to get to the leaders. She made up a lot of ground in the closing stages and could improve for either a stiffer 5f or a return to 6f. This was only her fourth handicap start and there is more to come.

Clever Cookie
Peter Niven
9th, Newcastle, July 1
Peter Niven’s popular nine-year-old was the oldest runner in the Northumberland Plate and, although he just finished outside of the money, he ran well enough off top weight to suggest he is on a workable handicap mark and can add to his six career Flat wins this season. He was ridden patiently from a wide draw and turning for home was at the back of the field and around eight lengths behind the winner Higher Power, who was prominent throughout. Clever Cookie made good progress in the home straight to be beaten only four lengths at the finish and had he not been short of room inside the final furlong he would have finished a bit closer.

Kimberella
Richard Fahey
3rd, Newcastle, July 1
The seven-year-old sprinter seems to have found further improvement since joining Fahey and he backed up a tremendous effort previously when a fast-finishing third over 5f in the Scottish Sprint Cup at Musselburgh with this equally meritorious performance. He was always in the firing line in this Group 3 and didn’t get the smoothest of runs inside the last two furlongs. You suspect he will continue to mix handicaps and Listed/Group races and appears to be in rude health.
