Speedy juvenile Yalta perfect for Nunthorpe

One of the best performances at Glorious Goodwood last week came from Mark Johnston's Yalta. It wasn't just a visual thing, it was also backed up by the time – he broke the track record when winning the Molecomb and is clearly very quick.

Apparently it was James McDonald's idea to drop the horse back to five furlongs after a couple of below par efforts in the Coventry and July Stakes – proving the jockey is as capable out of the saddle as he is in it – and it paid off in style.

The Last Lion, second in the Norfolk Stakes and no slouch himself, simply couldn't live with him and was being scrubbed along some way out and the victory margin of three lengths didn't flatter Yalta –he was that superior.
