Sandown Placepot perm: Tom Segal provides his picks for the Sunday Series card
With the good prize-money on offer it is no surprise to see some fiercely competitive racing at Sandown. It would be easy to get sucked into an expensive perm given the big fields but I think there are some horses to bank on, starting with Safari Dream in the opening nursery (3.42).
He's up 8lb for winning over course and distance last time but couldn't have done it much easier and might well be able to dominate again from stall three.
The Quinns look to have the best sprinter in Europe in Highfield Princess and, while Lord Riddifordis nowhere near as good as her, he's not bad at all as he showed when winning at Goodwood last time.
He's up only 3lb for that and while he has never run at Sandown, the stiff 5f should suit him perfectly in the Sky Bet Sunday Series Sprint Handicap (4.12).
The final banker is more risky because Ascending(6.12) is inexperienced but he won with loads in hand at Goodwood last time and has more improvement in him.
Charlie Appleby has so many top-class two-year-olds that he is surely the man to watch out for in the maiden for unraced horses (4.42).
The market will be the best guide but City Of Kings is marginally preferred of his pair. The other one to consider is Dasho Lennie, who holds a Group 2 entry and comes from a yard that has always done well with two-year-olds.
The other two Placepot races need at least two selections because they are incredibly difficult.
Having said that, Aqwaam took a massive step forward at Galway last time and can improve again for the in-form Ian Williams team in the Sky Bet Sunday Series Apprentice Handicap (5.12).
Throw Andaleep in too because he likes Sandown and is clearly in tremendous form currently.
Hopefully all eight will stand their ground in the fillies' handicap (5.42) to make life easier. All of them have a chance but the two I like most are , who has run well here twice, and Prism, who should enjoy the underfoot conditions.
