Richard Birch's play of the day at Huntingdon

Watamu

12.20 Huntingdon

Watamu makes plenty of appeal in the 2m mares’ novice hurdle (12.20) at Huntingdon, with the form of her Newbury reappearance fourth to Jackie Hobbs having been boosted several times since.

The Emma Lavelle-trained four-year-old probably needed that first run for 13 months, but shaped nicely in a race from which the second, St Irene, and the third, Strong Run, have won easily since.

Pitched in at the deep end in a Listed mares’ novice hurdle on Coral Gold Cup day at Newbury last month, Watamu was by not disgraced in finishing fifth behind La Conquiere.

Conditions should be ideal for Harry Cobden’s mount, who can take full advantage of the drop in class.
