Paul Kealy's play of the day at Royal Ascot

King's Gambit
If you can forgive King's Gambit a below-par return at Newbury, there are plenty of lines of form to suggest he's the one to beat in the Listed Wolferton Stakes (5.35), and I won't be surprised if James Doyle ends up regretting picking Haatem, who needs to prove himself at a new trip.
King's Gambit was well below his best at Newbury last month, but there's an obvious reason for that as he was tried in first-time blinkers and pulled incredibly hard, which gave him little chance of lasting home over 1m4f, a trip probably right at the end of his stamina range anyway.
He flew home for second in last year's Group 3 Hampton Court, having not got the run of the race, and his two fast-ground efforts after that resulted in half-length defeats to Alflaila and Los Angeles in a pair of York Group 2s.
King's Gambit wasn't disgraced when going for a valuable prize in Qatar in February, so I've no doubt he retains all his ability, and at around 8-1 or 9-1 he's the wrong price on his best form.
